Recently, we are hearing from homeowners of costly repairs due to damage caused to their homes because of the growing squirrel and rat population. The population is growing in the Villages due to the lack of predators and people setting out feeders and leaving trash out.
Yes, squirrels may look cute at first glance and their antics can be funny. However, they are rodents—close cousins to mice and rats—and have sharp teeth and claws. They can also carry parasites and fleas.
Squirrels:
1) eat the roots of roses and perennials
2) dig dozens of holes in lawns and gardens in the fall to bury food, and dig again in the spring to retrieve their stashes, damaging grass, flower, and vegetable beds
3) strip the bark off aspen, willow, and ash trees
4) sharpen their teeth on deck railings and other exterior wood surfaces, necessitating expensive repairs and repainting
5) eat wiring, sometimes corn-based—and can damage your holiday lighting. (They can also get inside attics or in engines of vehicles, damaging wires and insulation and leaving urine and feces behind.)
When extra food causes squirrel overpopulation, neighbors may be forced to hire pest control companies to remove squirrels. The cost runs about $100 per animal because the firms must make multiple trips to a residence to set and bait, check, and remove traps and animals. This does NO favor to the animals.
Please let wildlife be wild! Be a good neighbor so your fellow homeowners can stop experiencing damage to their properties. Please do not feed the squirrels.
They will enter your roof through vents!
DO NOT FEED PEANUTS!
